Subgenre: Paranormal | Folk Horror
Underlying Element: ghosts & spirits | madness & paranoia
Director: Iris K. Shim
Synopsis:
This movie is about a single mom haunted by childhood trauma from her own mother and will do everything to stop it from happening to her daughter.
Analysis:
Umma (2022) is a good movie that touches on Korean traditions and superstitions.
What’s even better is the way they incorporated mother-daughter relationships into something as terrifying as a generational curse. This is relatable not just to Korean families, but to anyone who ever experienced tough times growing up.
Unfortunately, the horror seems forced especially with the predictable jump scares. With everything that happened in the story and in the previous scenes, the resolution might seem too simple and abrupt.
The only best thing about this movie is probably the effects every time Sandra Oh’s face becomes distorted. It’s so seamless and amazing, but viewers need a keen eye for this.
This is an English-language movie, by the way.
