Subgenre: Slasher | Gore
Underlying Element: psycho killer | cannibalism
Director: Tobe Hooper
Synopsis:
This movie is about a group of friends who came across a family of weird cannibals on their way to visit an old house.
Analysis:
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) is the first and original movie in the Chainsaw Massacre franchise.
This may be the source of the typical horror movie trope where a group of friends go on a road trip, encounter a hitchhiker, stop by a dirty gasoline station in the middle of nowhere, and end up being chased by an “immortal” psycho killer.
For a 70s movie, the acting was good and believable. The focus on Leatherface and his family showed how crazy they really were. The insanity was so intense, it can already kill you.
There were lots of blood and gore, but there were also long unnecessary scenes as if they were just trying to make the movie longer. In fact, the lack of cannibalism and the short chainsaw action was a bit disappointing.
