Subgenre: Supernatural | Religious Horror
Underlying Element: possession | demons
Director: Mikael Håfström
Synopsis:
This movie is about a priest in training who was tasked to observe a veteran exorcist in action, which made him question his beliefs.
Analysis:
The Rite (2011) is not a typical demonic possession movie. It focuses more on the drama behind the life of an exorcist.
This was adapted from a book entitled The Rite: The Making of a Modern-Day Exorcist. It showcases the most important thing a priest needs to become a successful demon-slayer: faith.
As expected, Anthony Hopkins did a great job in his portrayal. Meanwhile, Colin O'Donoghue played a very annoying character throughout the movie with his indifference. The way he changed his mind at the last minute was also abrupt. Viewers will be shocked that all it took was a need for a proper movie ending.
For a possession movie, this one was a bit dull and dragging. There was a lack of exorcism action, and the demon had somewhat weak attacks compared to other films in a similar genre. Then again, the main character’s learnings were the objective here.
