Subgenre: Supernatural
Underlying Element: witchcraft & occult | mystery
Director: André Øvredal
Synopsis:
This movie is about a father-and-son duo tasked with doing an autopsy on a strange, unnamed woman found at an equally strange crime scene.
Analysis:
The Autopsy Of Jane Doe (2016) has everything from unseen forces, reanimated corpses, blood and guts, suspense, occult, family drama, and mystery.
Because this is an autopsy, viewers are presented with close-ups of slicing, cracking, and grinding body parts. Expect blood and internal organs galore.
Of course, there are a few jump scares with corpses everywhere. The terror escalates as they proceed with the autopsy.
The entire movie happened just within a few hours of the night, which means there are good action-packed scenes that are straight to the point and certainly have no dull moments.
Acting-wise, Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox are good. They really show expertise in anatomy. They get to explain scientific terms as to how the different stages of autopsy are done. Every detail is important because, like them, viewers also want to know more about Jane Doe.
Overall, this movie is a complete package. Good scares, good story. What really happened to Jane Doe will forever remain a mystery. There is no backstory, no flashbacks, and no sequel.
Enjoyed the quick review?
I recently watched this movie as well. I thought it was a decent little horror film but the single location setting got a bit repetitive in that Hirsch and Cox were constantly running from the autopsy room only to return a short time later. Still, it was a good watch for the most part.
