Subgenre: Gore | Extreme
Underlying Element: torture | mystery
Director: Darren Lynn Bousman
Synopsis:
This movie is about a loner cop who gets to lead the case of a copycat Jigsaw killer who targets his colleagues.
Analysis:
Spiral (2021) comes with the tagline “From the Book of Saw” which means that it is a spinoff of the Saw franchise and not really a chronological continuation of the film series.
The differentiation is actually a good idea because this movie is more of a whodunit type. With the story focusing more on solving brutal crimes, the signature violent deaths got overpowered.
It’s a given that the torture devices were still extreme, but the movie was not about the suffering of the victims. It was leaning more towards the drama surrounding the lead cop, which was unfortunately not believable because Chris Rock’s acting here is so awkward. That is in addition to his weird chemistry with Samuel L. Jackson as his father.
The explosive and abrupt ending calls for a sequel, but who knows if this kind of police theme will still be effective in the future.
