Subgenre: Psychological
Underlying Element: mystery | survival
Director: Adam Robitel
Synopsis:
This movie is about six strangers who were called to join a sick escape room game where those who fail to get out, die.
Analysis:
Escape Room (2019) is a twisted take on the popularity of escape room games, where a group of friends solves puzzles in the shortest time in order to win. In this movie, the stakes are high because the person who fails to escape dies. This is on top of the realistic setting.
The gruesome deaths will remind viewers of the Saw franchise, although this movie is milder and leans more toward the suspense of it all.
The only problem here is the lack of backstory from all the participants. Those who got their fair share of the introduction got more sympathy from the audience. No one would care if an unknown character dies. That lack of connection with the characters greatly affects the thrill.
Of course, in an attempt to make this a franchise, the ending calls for a sequel.
