Subgenre: Supernatural
Underlying Element: supernatural powers | madness & paranoia
Director: Kimberly Peirce
Synopsis:
This movie is about a bullied teenager who unleashes her newly discovered telekinetic powers on her mother and schoolmates.
Analysis:
Carrie (2013) is a modern take on Stephen King’s book of the same name. The movie is not scary at all since it is a redemption story.
Knowing that Carrie just stood up against the bullies is something viewers would want. That is if they are on the extreme side with death as a form of revenge.
For those who haven’t read the book, it’s more interesting to learn more about the backstory of the religious mother. Finding out where Carrie came from is intriguing compared to the questionable learning speed when she used her powers. The level of destruction is all too powerful, and the mom acting weird throughout the film is the scariest part.
The iconic bloody prom scene is the highlight, of course.
