This movie is about Count Dracula’s quest to avenge the death of his wife as a vampire and find the love of his life in Mina Harker.
Analysis:
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) is one of the best Dracula movies out there. Aside from the fact that it is based on Bram Stoker’s novel, the casting was perfect and worthy of praise from audiences around the world. It won best horror film, best director, best actor for Gary Oldman, best writing, and best costume at the 19th Saturn Awards. Not to mention the 4 Oscar nominations where they won best costume design, best sound effects editing, and best makeup at the 65th Academy Awards.
Among the many actors who have played the famous Count throughout the years, Gary Oldman’s version of Dracula was a standout. What set him apart was his overall look. From his elegant old Transylvanian Count attire to his gothic steampunk outfit matching his long wavy hair, this version did not conform to the usual black-caped vampire we used to see. Acting-wise, he was so good.
Winona Ryder as Mina was also a great choice. On the other hand, Keanu Reeves somehow lacked emotions and facial expressions. Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing had rather short exposure and his personal issues with vampires would have been a great horror concept.
The only problem was this movie focused more on Dracula’s love for Mina and their rollercoaster gothic romance.
